Battle of Brentford, 1642

Categories: Armed Forces

One of the many battles of the English Civil War. King Charles's forces were advancing on London. Robert Devereux, 3rd Earl of Essex attempted to stop them at the Brentford bridge.

A small pitched battle took place between a detachment of the Royalist army (predominantly horse with one regiment of Welsh foot) under the command of Prince Rupert, and two infantry regiments of Parliamentarians with some horse in support. The result was a victory for the Royalists.

Having won the battle the Royalist forces sacked the town, which only encouraged Londoners who feared for their property to side with the Parliamentarians.
