Building    From 1907  To 1966

Imperial Hotel, Russell Square

Designed by Charles Fitzroy Doll. The picture was taken in 1913 after the completion of the extension, which is the section on the left, to the north (2017: we now think the 'extension' was into the older Victorian properties to the left, outside the photo). The Burlington Magazine (2021: now a dead link but some pdfs are available if you pay) carries a report, with pictures, of Bolton House, one of the buildings that was there before. The hotel, with its extension, was demolished and rebuilt in the 1960s.

2023: A London Inheritance has a very informative post with photographs of a historic 'conduit' (a small building that stored water for local distribution) that was at the rear of this site. During the development of the hotel Doll rescued the conduit and it is now at New River Head.
