Fountain

Charles Walker & the Duchess

Erection date: 17/7/1885

Inscription

{ On the north-east face:}
This garden was opened for the use of the public by Her Grace the Duchess of Sutherland and Countess of Cromartie, July 17 1885.

{On the south-west face:}
This public garden has been laid out and completed at the sole cost of Charles Clement Walker Esquire: of Lilleshall Old Hall Shropshire:
he of Her Majesty's Justices of the Peace for the Counties of Salop and Stafford, a native of the Parish of Clerkenwell, for the free use of the inhabitants thereof for health, recreation and enjoyment.
. . . . .
And in affectionate remembrance of his mother Agnes Walker, long resident in the parish. 1885.

Lilleshall Hall is now the Lilleshall National Sports and Conferencing Centre. Their website shows the impressive building and says "Originally built in 1831 as the hunting lodge and family retreat of the Duke of Sutherland."  One wonders if they become friends through their landlord-tenant relationship or vice versa.

WC1, Wilmington Square Garden

Compare this memorial with the one in Northampton Square.

Ian Visits has a good post on this square, where we learnt that what we've always thought of as a lovely feature - the absence of a road on the north-west side of the square, was the result of a mistake.
