{Beneath a Victoria Cross:}
Lieutenant General The Right Honourable the Lord Freyberg, VC, GCMG, KCB, KBE, DSO***, 1889 - 1963.
The Queen's Royal West Surrey Regiment awarded the Victoria Cross for personal gallantry on 13th November 1916. Wounded many times, his utter contempt of danger enabled assaults under his command to be successful. Later Governor-General of New Zealand. Born here.
