The Plough Brewery - pump wheel

Inscription

The Plough Brewery - 'The cornerstone of Clapham'
Originally known as the Clapham Brewery, a brewhouse has stood on this site since 1801. The present building was renamed Plough Brewery by Thomas Woodward & Sons in about 1868 and it was then that the railings marked TW at the front of the building were installed. The site included 8 dwellings and tap house and was surrounded by meadows and gardens stretching towards the river.
The property has an artesian well 403 feet deep with an 8" bore designed by A C Potter & Co as well as a secondary well 150 feet deep. The large steel end apple wood wheel mounted above is from the pump that would have stood at the head of the artesian well.

The plaque is inside the archway of the building. The photograph we took was very difficult to read, as a lot of the letters have fallen off. We have therefore used a clearer picture (even with the Harley Davidson in front of it) from Marston.
