Statue

Cromwell statue

Erection date: 14/11/1899

Inscription

{On the front of the plinth:}
Oliver Cromwell, 1599 - 1658

Controversy over who, if anyone, should fund this statue was overcome by the PM, Lord Rosebery, making a gift of it.
Apparently Cromwell's spurs are upside down. If this is true does it mean something, or is it just a mistake? In the 80's a handkerchief dangling from a rear jeans pocket was supposed to signify gayness. Just a thought.

SW1, Parliament Square

On September 3rd, the day he died, people will gather at this statue to commemorate him, organised by the Cromwell Association. The alternative view is given by the regular mutterings that this statue to a tyrant is a disgrace and should be removed.  Hansard records the opposition this statue had in 1895 when debated in Parliament.
