Statue

Sir Robert Geffrye

Erection date: 1723

Inscription

{Below the statue:}
Sr. Robert Geffryes, Knt. Alderman and Ironmonger, founder of this hospital.

This is a 1913 replica of the lead statue, the 1723 original of which was taken away by the Ironmongers' Company and placed in the new almshouses at Mottingham which were set up in 1910. Since then the almshouses have moved to Hook, Hampshire, taking the statue with them, we believe.

Site: Sir Robert Geffrye (1 memorial)

E2, Kingsland Road, Geffrye Museum

The statue is above the door in the pedimented central block.  These almshouses are now a lovely museum with room settings from different eras.

2020: Despite Black Lives Matter protests this statue will apparently remain in place.

2021: The museum put out a statement: ""We believe there is potential to retain the statue on site but in an alternative and less prominent space, where we can better tell the full story of the history of the buildings and Robert Geffrye's life, including his involvement in transatlantic slavery."
