Near this site stood The Curtain Theatre, 1577 - c.1627, second English public playhouse. Here William Shakespeare acted. Plays by Shakespeare and Ben Jonson were performed.

June 2012 a Museum of London archaeological dig discovered the Curtain Theatre. July 2013 Londonist reported on the plan for the site which involve the display of the remains, a modern theatrical space and, oh, surprise, a tower block - a 40-storey skyscraper. June 2016: The building and plaque have gone. Some great archaeology.

Either someone erected the plaque behind the lamppost, or someone erected the lamppost in front of the plaque. Either way some thoughtlessness (being polite) was involved.
