The first stone of this hospital was laid by Charles Duke of Richmond, Knight of the Garter, Post Master General, and one of the presidents on the XXIX June MDCCCXXXI.

In the picture of the building the plaque can be seen behind the cyclist. This Ophthalmic Hospital and the next-door Charing Cross Hospital developed this site at the same time.
