Dickens at Cobley Farm

Inscription

On this spot was situated Cobley's Farm, where Charles Dickens lived in 1843 while writing 'Martin Chuzzlewit'. It is recorded that during his walks with Forster in the Finchley lanes hard by he conceived the immortal character of Mrs. Gamp.

Returned from his first trip to America Dickens spent some time here in 1842-3, and wrote Martin Chuzzlewit, based partly on his time in the States.

Site: Dickens at Cobley Farm (1 memorial)

N12, Queen's Avenue, 70

The farm was actually on Bow Lane but when the area was developed Queen's Avenue was created and presumably this house is nearest to the site of the old farmhouse.  This plaque looks like it might have been erected on the house when it was first built.  Barnet Council provide some information about this area.
