Thimble shelters - north

Erection date: 1919

Inscription

{On the panel, facing the Palace:}
Erected by "The Silver Thimble Fund", 1919.

{On the panel, facing the pond:}
In memory of our sailors who upheld "Britain's sure shield" 1914 - 1918.

The navy has been referred to as "Britain's sure shield" since, at least, Trafalgar.

Site: Thimble shelters - north (1 memorial)

W2, Broad Walk, Kensington Gardens

These shelters were in good condition when we saw them but have been the target of vandals in the past, which probably explains the removal of the seating (vandals are notoriously lazy). 2014: they were Listed Grade 2.

The north shelter commemorates the navy; the south the army.
