Fountain

Toynbee fountain

Erection date: 1868

Inscription

{Plaque on the west face:}
In memory of Joseph Toynbee Esq., FRS. Originated by the working men of Wimbledon and erected with funds contributed by them and by his friends and others interested in the public good. AD 1868.

The fountain has four basins which would have supplied water but the activating buttons and the spouts are all lost. However some back-plates remain. Our close-up photo shows a lovely water lily surround which we have seen also on the Enfield Town fountain.

Site: Toynbee fountain (1 memorial)

SW19, Wimbledon Hill Street

At Museum of Wimbledon we learn that the plaque we have transcribed is a 1960s replacement. The original disappeared sometime before 1925 and reappeared in May 1977 in the front garden of 60 Church Road, Wimbledon (to the north). They have a small photo of it where it's just possible to confirm that the text on the replacement is identical.

2023: The fountain was restored and is again supplying water.
