Erection date: 22/1/2010
{On a steel plaque attached to the top of the plinth:}
Plough Lane Landmark
Sam Burford 2009
Commemorating the original home of Wimbledon Football Club, winners of a unique cup double: the FA Amateur Cup in 1963 and the FA Cup in 1988.
Map displaying the structure of the 1988 FA Cup Final
{a graphic showing the textured grid of the sculpture labelled with events during the game, e.g. Princess Diana meets the Wimbledon team, typical play, Sanchez rises to score, etc.}
Made with the kind and generous support of the Wimbledon Fans, Barratt Homes, London Borough of Merton, The Engine Room, Chelsea College of Art & Design Foundry, Benson-Sedgwick, Morris Singer, and Metropolitan Works.
Warning: do not climb on artwork. The surface of the artwork is sharp in places. Take care when touching.
The artist's website has a photo of the textured surface in the studio.
Our location shot shows WFC's double-headed eagle on one side of the sculpture. But it's the textured surface which is interesting. We can find very little about it on the web and it seems not to have gained much attention, possibly because it is an unusual and challenging artwork. The Local Guardian describes it as a "plinth" and elsewhere it is a "monolith". It is an attempt to capture a football game in an abstract graphic. Another such work is a diagram showing a cricket game at the John Edrich Gate at the Kennington Oval.

SW19, Plough Lane
Local Guardian informs that a solid oak waterwheel marking the historical significance to the area of the River Wandle was unveiled on the same day. We saw this, further north up Durnsford Road, at the Co-op, in the unnamed access road. But we could see no plaque or text explaining what it was.
