In addition to the information shown on his Wikipedia page, our colleague, Andrew Behan, states that he was the elder child of Captain Thomas Rees Wilson (1896-1971) and Jennie Wilson née Humphreys (1903-1981). His birth was registered in the 1st quarter of 1929 in the Pwllheli Registration District, Caernarvonshire (now renamed as Gwynedd). His younger brother was John Rees Wilson (1931-2005). 

His marriage to Elizabeth Turner (b.1929) was registered in the 4th quarter of 1952 in the Pwllheli Registration District and they had one son, Neil Wilson (1958-1997) and two daughters.

He was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh (FRSE) in 1975.

He died suffering from cancer, aged 79 years, on 22 May 2008 in Stirling, Stirlingshire, Scotland.

He is shown as Herbert Wilson on the Royal Society of Chemistry plaque and as H. R. Wilson on the DNA, X-ray, diffraction studies 1953 plaque, both at King's College, Strand, London, WC2.
