Hugh Garside

Hugh Garside

Westminster Councillor. Married to Mair Garside.

Our colleague Andrew Behan has kindly investigated this man: Hugh Gervais Garside was born on 18 August 1928 the son of Robert Ollerenshaw Garside and Annie Garside, née Vessey, in Macclesfield, Cheshire. His father had been a Laboratory Assistant in a Calico Print Works and who died when he was 20 months old. His widowed mother was a Certified Day School Teacher. There is a Hugh Gervais Garside shown in the London Gazette dated 4 June 1948 as being being appointed a 2nd Lieutenant, from a cadet, in the Royal Army Education Corps on 17 April 1948.

He married Mair Eluned Rees on 30 July 1954 at Maendy Congregational Church, Maindy, Glamorganshire, whom he had met through the National Association of Labour Student Organisations. They moved to Westminster living at 434 Edgware Road, Bayswater before moving in 1956 to 134 Tachbrook Street, Pimlico. He stood, unsuccessfully, as the Labour Party candidate for the Ealing South constituency in a parliamentary by-election in 1958 and at the 1959 general election, losing on both occasions to Sir Brian Caldwell Cook Batsford. They had three sons, Glyndwr R Garside, born 1959, Owain R Garside, born 1962 and Martin H Garside, born 1965. He died, aged 65 years, on 3 September 1993 and probate was granted with his estate totalling £274,881.
