Born in New York, child of recent immigrants, achieved fame as a violinist at age 7. Spent most of his career in Britain, becoming a British citizen in 1985. Initially working in the classics, as performer and conductor, he later worked with Ravi Shankar and made jazz recordings with Stephane Grappelli. Died in Berlin.
