Categories: Exploring

Explorer and naval administrator. Born Devon. Elder brother to William. Sailed in the same North-East Passage expedition as Willoughby, as captain of the 'Edward Bonaventure', the ship that had the chief pilot on board and the one that survived. Borough found a sea route through to Moscow, with a bit of overland at the end, and was important in setting up the first major English overseas trading company, the 'Muscovy Company'. A member and Master of the Trinity Brethren. The later part of his life was spent as an administrator at Chatham, where he died. No picture available so we have used his burial entry: buried in Chatham 14 July 1584.
