Baroness Evelina Gertrude de Rothschild

Categories: Friend / family

Evelina Gertrude de Rothschild was born on 25 August 1839 the second of the five children of Baron Lionel Nathan de Rothschild (1808- 1879) and Baroness Charlotte de Rothschild née von Rothschild (1819-1884). Her birth was registered in the 4th quarter of 1839 in the St George Hanover Square registration district and her siblings were: Leonora de Rothschild (1837-1911), Nathaniel Mayer de Rothschild (1840-1915), Alfred Charles de Rothschild (1842-1918) & Leopold de Rothschild (1845-1917).

Our Picture Source/Wikipedia page gives much information about this person.

The 1841 census shows her living in Piccadilly, Westminster, with her parents, two siblings Leonora and Nathaniel, together with four male and nine female servants

She was described in the 1851 census as a scholar at home, residing at 148 Piccadilly, Westminster, with her parents, her four siblings, together with a governess, a butler, an under butler, two footmen, a housekeeper, a head nurse, a second nurse, two lady's maids, a kitchen maid, a scullery maid and three housemaids. Her father was described as the Member of Parliament for the City of London and a merchant.

On 28 June 1865 she married the Austrian Baron Ferdinand James Anselm von Rothschild (1839-1898) in the City of London registration district. They lived at 143 Piccadilly.

The numbering of Piccadilly is not straightforward but we think 143 (her married home) and 148 (her childhood home) were both probably demolished in the 1960s, along with 145, Queen Elizabeth II's childhood home, to enable the Hyde Park Corner traffic horror that we have today.  See Byron statue for more information.

She died, aged 27 years, on 4 December 1866 after giving birth to their first child, a stillborn son, her death being registered in the St George Hanover Square registration district. Her body was interred in the Rothschild mausoleum in the West Ham Jewish Cemetery, Buckingham Road, London, E15 1SP.

She was commemorated by her husband in the Evelina Children's Hospital, by her father in a girls' school in Jerusalem and by her mother in a school/college Prize.

To see how she is related to other members of the Rothschild family who feature on plaques on the London Remembers website see our entry for Nathaniel Charles Jacob Rothschild.
