Sir Ambrose Heal

Furniture designer and retailer. Born at Crouch End. Studied at the Slade School of Fine Art before joining the family firm which ran the Heal & Son department store. He designed the simple, sturdy furniture which was to become the shop's trademark. Chair of Heal's 1913 - 53. Knighted in 1933, he died at Beaconsfield.

Married twice. Also, in the 1920s he had a close relationship with Dodie Smith, one of his employees at the time, and with Prudence Maufe, the wife in the Maufe couple who were designing his house. His genealogy can be found at Benedict Heal.
