John Ortelli

Giovanni Battista Ortelli was a successful Italian businessman who founded the Italian Hospital Queen Square.

The badly deteriorated Ortelli family vault is at St Mary's RC Cemetery, NW10. There you will find a photo of the inside of the vault and a transcription of the text:

"In memory of Commendatore John Ortelli (late of Hatton Garden). Born 1830, died 1st Nov. 1898, buried in Appiano, Italy. Founder of the Hospital for Italians in Queen Square, WC, President of the Italian Night School, first Associate of the Italian Benevolent Society, an ardent lover of his country and admirer of England and a true friend to the poor."

Jean Hood is researching the Ortellis and has a lot of information about our John amongst others. She contacted us in 2013 and we think the website might be a bit in flux. If you are interested in the Ortellis then Jean is what you need!
