Ralph Vaughan Williams

Composer. Born at the vicarage in Down Ampney, Gloucestershire. Entered the Royal College of Music in 1890, where he studied alongside Hubert Parry. He went on to study in Berlin and Paris. Under the influence of Gustav Holst he became a leader in the English folk-song movement. Major works include the London and Pastoral Symphonies and the opera Hugh the Drover. His film scores include Scott of the Antarctic and 49th Parallel. Died at his home, 10 Hanover Terrace, Regent's Park.
