Naval officer and politician. Born St James's Square. Joined the Navy aged 13 (this was not uncommon) and served in the French Revolutionary Wars. Charles had 7 elder brothers so the chances of him inheriting his father's titles were slim but he lucked out, and inherited on the death of his eldest brother, Charles, the 2nd Earl in 1832. Died, an admiral, at home in Piccadilly. Grandfather of the 5th Earl.
