Harold Wilson

London Historians: "Harold Wilson was the second son of the reverend. Serving as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 2nd Middlesex Regiment, he lost his life at the battle of Spion Kop ..." Spion Kop is near Ladysmith in South Africa. During the Boer War a battle took place there, 23–24 January 1900.

Our colleague Andrew Behan has researched this man: 2nd Lieutenant Harold Alfred Cobbe Wilson was born on 23 September 1878 in Chiswick, a son of the Reverend Alfred Wilson and Fanny Wilson, née Cobbe. On 10 November 1878 he was baptised by his own father. The family were living at 2 Woodstock Road, Bedford Park, Chiswick and they were still here at the time of the 1881 census. He was commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant into the 2nd Battalion of the Middlesex Regiment and was killed in action, aged 21 years, on 24 January 1900 at the Battle of Spion Kop, South Africa. He was posthumously awarded the Queen's South Africa Medal with two clasps, Cape Colony and Relief of Ladysmith.
