Awarded the VC for his heroism on 1 September 1914, age 28, while serving in the Royal Horse Artillery. "During a holding action by his battery and although badly wounded, he continued to bring his guns into action, a conspicuous act of bravery. (Néry, France)". Freemason at: №1000, Priory Lodge.
