Samuel Morley

Born Well Street Hackney into a Nottingham family of wool/hosiery manufacturers and merchants. His father John, had come to London to set up an outlet for their products. Samuel went into the family business and became extremely successful, wealthy and well-respected. Very active in the Congregationalist church, promoting local missionary work. Promoted the Abolitionist cause. Enabled the Old Vic to survive and endowed Morley College for adult education. Liberal MP for Bristol 1868 - 1885. Father of Howard Morley. Died at his Mayfair home, 34 Grosvenor Street.
