Col. Sir James Cantlie, KBE, MA, MB, FRCS, RAMC (T)

Sir James Cantlie was a British physician. He was a pioneer of first aid, which in 1875 was unknown. He was also influential in the study of tropical diseases and in the debates concerning degeneration theory.

Assistant Commissioner in the St John Ambulance Brigade, No. 1 District Metropolitan Corps, 1895-1923. Knight Grace in the Order of St John.

Served in Egypt and later worked in Hong Kong where he co-founded what later became the University of Hong Kong. Here one of his pupils was Sun Yat-Sen.  Back in London he invited Dr Sun to visit, and, when he was kidnapped, Cantlie led a media campaign which succeeded in having him released.

Born in Banffshire.
