Architect. Born Basil Urwin Spence in Bombay. He studied at the Edinburgh College of Art, where he won many prizes. His most famous work is probably the new Coventry cathedral which was completed in 1962. Some notable works in London: Swiss Cottage Leisure Centre, Hyde Park Barracks, Home Office building in Petty France. Knighted in 1960 and awarded the Order of Merit in 1962. Died at Yaxley Hall, near Eye, Suffolk.
