Black Lives Matter

Categories: Race Issues

Black Lives Matter (BLM) is a decentralized political and social movement, that started in the US, that seeks to highlight racism, discrimination, and racial inequality experienced by black people. When its supporters come together, they do so primarily to protest incidents of police brutality and racially motivated violence against black people. It started following the killings of Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown, Eric Garner, Pamela Turner and Rekia Boyd, among others.

The movement began in 2013 but it achieved significant international attention during the global George Floyd protests in 2020 following his murder by a Minneapolis police officer in May that year.
