A series of trials which started at Winchester in the aftermath of the Battle of Sedgemoor, which ended the Monmouth Rebellion. Further trials took place at Salisbury, Dorchester and Taunton, and in all, more than 1,400 prisoners were tried. About 150 men were sentenced to death, and over 800 were transported to the West Indies. Our picture shows the trials' first victim, Dame Alice Lyle, who was beheaded for harbouring fugitives.
