Edward Whymper

Mountaineer and wood-engraver. Born at Lambeth Terrace, Kennington Road. He trained as a wood-engraver, producing alpine scenery drawings. He made the first ascent of many peaks in the Mont Blanc Massif and the Pennine Alps. The most famous was the Matterhorn, although on the descent, four members of the expedition slipped and were killed. He made many more expeditions in Greenland, South America and the Canadian Rockies. Also first up Chimborazo in the Andes. H designed a tent which became as the "Whymper tent". Died at Chamonix, France.
