Elijah Hoole

Categories: Architecture

Architect of Methodist churches, settlement halls and social housing.

Born in London to Elijah Hoole, a Wesleyan Methodist missionary. Hoole had a long working relationship with Octavia Hill : he was her 'favourite' architect and he worked for her for 40 years. Hoole designed the first university settlement, Toynbee Hall, and the only Methodist settlement, Bermondsey Settlement (demolished 1969).

Other London work includes: Wesleyan Methodist Chapel, Prince of Wales Road (2021 the Zabludowicz Gallery); The Old Vic Theatre, Waterloo Road (remodelled); Redcross Cottages and Whitecross Cottages, Southwark; Gable Cottages, Sudrey Street, Southwark; restoration of Wesley's Chapel, City Road (including the pedestal for the John Wesley statue); 9A Gainsborough Gardens (originally Eirene Cottage), Hampstead; Ranston Street Cottages, Lisson Grove, Paddington.

We can find no image of the man so instead we are using his drawing for the Crouch Hill Chapel.
