Field Marshal, HRH Prince George, 2nd Duke of Cambridge

Categories: Armed Forces, Royalty

Countries: Germany

KG, KT, KP, GCB, GCMG, GCVO, KJStJ, ADC, Colonel of the Grenadier Guards, Colonel in Chief of the Royal Artillery, Royal Engineers, 17th Lancers, 60th Rifles and 77th Regiment. Commander-in-Chief of the army for 39 years during which it failed to renew and modernise, possibly due to his philosophy: "There is a time for everything, and the time for change is when you can no longer help it." He was forcibly retired.

Born at Cambridge House in Hanover, Germany. First cousin to Queen Victoria. And grandson of King George III. Contrary to the wishes of his family he married an actress who had already born four children, two of which were his. This marriage was not officially recognised so she got no title and called herself Mrs FitzGeorge. The duke continued to have other mistresses, notably Mrs Louisa Beauclerk for the last 33 years of his life. He died at Gloucester House, Piccadilly and is buried next to his wife in Kensal Green Cemetery. This location coincidentally also places him only 60 feet away from Mrs Beauclerk's grave.
