George Bentham

Botanist. Born in Stoke, near Plymouth. His family moved to St Petersburg in 1805, where he becam proficient in several languages. In France he studied at the universities of Tours and Montpelier. Returning to England he became secretary to his uncle Jeremy Bentham. Secretary of the Royal Horticultural Society form 1829 to 1840. His publication 'Genera Plantarum' remains a standard work. Died at his home, 25 Wilton Place, Kensington.
