Hannah Billig

Doctor. Born at 41 Hanbury Street, Spitalfields. Qualified as a doctor in 1925, she set up her first clinic in the east end of London in 1935. During WW2 she was the doctor in charge of air raid shelters in Wapping, and for her courage and bravery in these times she was awarded the George Medal. She joined the Indian Army Medical Corps and was posted to Calcutta. On her retirement in 1964 she moved to Caesarea in Israel, where she continued to treat local people until her death.
