Awarded the VC for his heroism on 16 September 1916, age 29, while serving in the 49th Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force. "When bombs were running short he ran along the parados under heavy fire, he opened fire and inflicted heavy losses on the enemy who thought they were surrounded. 62 prisoners surrendered to him; quick thinking yet conspicuous bravery.
