Kenneth Smedley MacLean was born on 22 November 1914, the elder child of Hugh MacLean (1879-1957) and Ida MacLean née Smedley (1877-1944). His birth was registered in the 1st quarter of 1915 in the Wandsworth Registration District, London and his sister was Barbara Duckworth MacLean (1917-2013).

On 22 December 1939 he was commissioned as a Temporary Surgeon Lieutenant in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve and on the following day he married Joan Hardaker (1914-2002) in Emmanuel Church, Lyncroft Gardens, London, NW6.

On 16 November 1959 he is shown as arriving at Southampton Docks with his wife, having embarked in New York, USA, aboard the RMS Queen Mary of The Cunard Steam-Ship Company Limited line. The ship's manifest describes him as a physician and they were residing at Heathdown, The Ridge, Woldingham.
