Lisa Pontecorvo

Categories: Cyclist, Tragedy

Countries: Scotland

Killed at the junction of Madras Place and Holloway Road. Run over by a cement mixer while wheeling her bicycle across the Holloway Road. The traffic had stopped, she walked her bike across and the driver moved forward and killed her. The driver had removed his ‘blind-spot’ mirror the week before. The truck that killed Emma Foa was operated by the same company, Hanson.

Born Glasgow. She was 64 and had been very active locally as an environmental campaigner: The Regent Quarter would be much duller and more corporate were it not for her, and the lovely Edward Square, the site of her memorials, was under threat of development before she got involved. Obituary in the Guardian. Report of the folk opera written about her life.

She lived at 60 Thornhill Square.

Andrew Behan researched Pontecorvo's dates: "The nearest I could get to finding her date of birth was May 1944. This was on a Companies House website where she was shown as a director of Islington Building Preservation Trust (02817345). The England and Wales, Death Index, 1989-2018 gives her date of death as Monday, 8 September 2008. It also gives her full name as Lisa Simonetta Pontecorvo."
