Lupino Lane

Categories: Cinema, Theatre

Actor and theatre manager. Born Henry William George Lupino in London. He came from a theatrical family and adopted the name 'Lane' from a great aunt. He made his first stage appearance at the age of four. Following a varied career in theatre and films, he achieved his greatest success in the musical 'Me and my Girl' featuring the 'Lambeth Walk' song and dance, which became popular throughout Europe. Died at his home 11 Grosvenor Cottages, Eaton Terrace.

2020: David Sulkin of the Amwell Society wrote to tell us: "LLs great aunt was Sara Lane who was the manager and licensee of the Britannia Theatre, Hoxton. Sara Lane told Henry Lupino that, if he adopted her name, he would benefit from her will. He took the name but received no bequest. Sara Lane died in 1899 and a great crowd stood in Hoxton Street as her funeral cortege went by. The Wikipedia entry for the Britannia Theatre lists Sara Lane as Sarah. It also says that when she died, she left £250,000. Now that was money."
