Categories: Art, Seriously Famous

Countries: France, Spain

Born Spain. Didn't like travelling, lived most of his live in France and died at home near Cannes. 1944 joined the Communist Party in France, lending his name and reputation to the cause. The Communists considered most of his art decadent, but accepted the quite conventional doves that he designed as symbols for the peace and anti-nuclear war movements.

Picasso spent 2 months in London in the summer of 1919, working for Diaghilev's Russian Ballet designing the sets and costumes for 'Le Tricorne' which premiered on 22 July 1919 at the Alhambra Theatre. He and wife Olga (one of Diaghilev's dancers) stayed, with the rest of the company, at the Savoy Hotel. While in London Picasso was taken to Savile Row by Clive Bell to buy "an English gentleman's" suit and bowler hat.

Picasso was again in Britain for the 1950 peace congress in Sheffield.
