A de Havilland DH.34 G-EBBX of Imperial Airways, which had only just taken off from Croydon Airport bound for Paris, crashed at Purley in Surrey. All seven passengers and the pilot were killed. The plane hit the Kingsdown housing estate, which was then under construction. A subsequent inquest found that the aircraft crashed due to an unknown mechanical defect, and had stalled whilst an emergency landing was being attempted.
