Salmon & Gluckstein

Categories: Commerce

Tobacco retailer which become the largest tobacco sellers in the UK, with over 140 retail outlets.

Samuel Gluckstein (1821-73) was born in Rheinberg, Prussia (now Germany) on 4 January 1821, the son of Helena and Lehmann Gluckstein. He began the cigar business when he arrived in London in 1843.

In 1863, for the good of the business, Samuel arranged for his daughter Lena (1846-1907), to marry Barnett Salmon (1829-97), a cigar salesman. Thus the partnership was formed although the business was known as Gluckstein & Co until 1870 when it was changed to Salmon & Gluckstein, made official on Samuel's death, when other Glucksteins, and eventually members of the Salmon family, took on the management.

In 1902 the business was sold to Imperial Tobacco.

See Lehmann Gluckstein for more background details of the family and their early business.
