Sir William Barlow

Born Oldham. At various times Chair of the Post Office, BICC, etc. President of The Royal Academy of Engineering 1991-96. Our picture source outlines his career.

Our colleague, Andrew Behan, informs us that he was born as George William Barlow on 8 June 1924 at 16 Birch Avenue, Oldham, Lancashire. He was the son of Albert Edward Barlow (1896–1984) and Annice Barlow née Duckworth (1895–1957). He had a sister, Mary (b. 1926).

In 1948 he married Elaine Mary Atherton Adamson (1924-2017) in Hemsworth, Yorkshire. The London Gazette confirms that the honour of Knighthood was conferred upon him as Sir George William Barlow on 2 August 1977. Electoral registers show that from at least 2003 they were living at 4 Parkside, Henley-on-Thames, RG9 1TX.

He died, aged 87 years, on 19 May 2012, his death being registered in Henley-on-Thames.
