Thomas Emley Young was born c.1844 in Newcastle, Northumberland, the eldest of the six children of Thomas James Young (1819-1889) and Jane Young née Emley (1817-1909). His birth was registered in the 1st quarter of 1844 in the Newcastle registration district.
In the 1851 census he is shown as a scholar, living with his parents at Bedlington Iron Works, Bedlington, Northumberland, with two siblings: Richard Mark Young (1834-1923) and William Michael Young (1847-1923). His father's occupation was described as a clerk in the iron works.
The 1861 census shows him and his eldest brother, Richard, as clerks in an Insurance office, living at 3 Clifton Villas, Hackney, with his parents, his five siblings: Richard, William, James Robson Young (1851-1931), Emily Hannah Young (1854-1939) & John Ward Young (1856-1929), together with a female domestic servant. His father was described as a manager at an iron foundry.
In January 1866 he enrolled at the University of London where he graduated in 1869 with a BA degree. He gave his occupation as a manager to an insurance company, as did his brother, Richard, in the 1871 census and they were living at Fallodon House, Hackney, with his parents, his five siblings, together with a female general servant. His father was still described as a manager to an iron foundry and his brother, James, was a clerk at the iron foundry.
On 12 September 1871 he married Harriett Maria Rayner (1848-1933) at St Augustine's Church, Highbury, where the marriage register shows him as an actuary living in Hackney, whilst she is described as a spinster from Highbury Park who was a daughter of a physician.
The 1881 census shows him as an actuary and manager of a life assurance company living at 108 Evering Road, Hackney, with his wife and their five children: Edith Beatrice Young (1874-1957), Arthur Stanley Young (1875-1956), Ernest Eric Young (1877-1945), Sydney Norman Young (1879-1932) & Hilda Ellen Maud Young (1880-1918), together with a cook, two nurses and a house-maid. The 1891 census shows him as an actuary, still residing at 108 Evering Road, Hackney, with his wife, their five children and three female domestic servants.
The 1900 Post Office London Directory lists him as an actuary to the Commercial Union Assurance Company Limited at 24, 25 & 26 Cornhill, London, EC and this is confirmed in 1901 census that shows him still living at 108 Evering Road, Hackney, with his wife, their five children, together with a cook and a house-maid.
He served as Mayor of Hackney for the year 1910-1911 and in the 1911 census he described himself as a consulting actuary still living in the 13 roomed property at 108 Evering Road, Hackney with his wife, their son -Sidney and their daughter - Hilda, together with a female servant.
His wife's death was registered in the 2nd quarter of 1933 in the Hackney registration district and probate records confirm that he died, aged 89 years, on 1st September 1933 in Hackney. Probate was granted on 3 November 1933 to the Westminster Bank Limited and his effects totalled £58,568-10s-3d.
