WW2 aircraft crash

Categories: Aviation

The story of this crash is very well told at Their Last Night.   Here we give a brief summary.

The plane was a a Mark 5 Halifax No DK 253 of 427 Squadron based at Leeming, Yorkshire.  It was one of 33 aircraft sent on the night of the 15th to bomb a rubber factory in Montlucan, south of Paris (in occupied France).  The raid was successful and the other aircraft returned safely but in the small hours of 16 September DK253 passed over Harmondsworth and crashed on the Moor spreading debris over a wide area.  All 7 crew members died.
