Darcey Bussell - Dancer with a Ribbon

Erection date: 1997

Site: Darcey Bussell - Dancer with a Ribbon (1 memorial)

W1, Oxford Street, 116 - 122, The Plaza

The 3 green panels behind Darcey carry the lettering 'B' '&' 'H'. This 1925 building was designed for the department store Bourne and Hollingsworth. Named after its founders, the brothers-in-law Walter William Bourne and Howard E. Hollingsworth, who started the store in 1894 in Westbourne Grove as a drapery shop. Competition with nearby Whiteleys caused the move to the Oxford Street location in 1902. The store was remodelled by Slater & Moberly and that's the building we have today, although all the interiors are totally lost.
