Alfred Hitchcock, Michael Balcon, Ivor Novello, Gracie Fields, ‘The Lady Vanishes’, ‘The Wicked Lady’ worked and were filmed here.

Hackney owns up: "The plaque states that 'The Wicked Lady' was filmed at Gainsborough when it was in fact filmed at the Gainsborough Lime Grove Studios at Shepherds Bush."

Opposite, in Shoreditch Park, you will find Hitchcock's Reel, a sculpture by John Edwards in the form of a giant metal film reel, without the film. Prior to about 2015 this used to be at the Leonard Street / Paul Street junction.
