This stone was laid by Mrs Palfreman of South Hampstead, 1st Novr. 1886

Messrs. Bennett - Builders

Below two of the ground floor windows, on the stone window surrounds, are carved about 15 sets of initials (including E. K. G.; F. E.; K. W.. Some of this stonework has crumbled so badly that the letters are completely lost. Only when we looked at our photos did we see that there are some similar initials at the top of the plaque, mostly covered by the security windows grills.

N4, Holly Park, Holly Park Methodist Church

Holly Park Methodist Church, on Crouch Hill, was founded in 1875 in an iron church, opened by Sir Francis Lycett.

The permanent church was designed, Gothic-style, by Elijah Hoole in 1881-2. Hoole also designed the Sunday school and lecture hall, built in 1886. Hoole considered this later work to  to be his best work. A clock tower and spire were added to the front left of the church in 1910. Although we can find no confirmation it's fair to assume that the church was damaged in WW2 bombings, because it was pulled down in 1961 and a replacement church, designed by Michael Pipe, together with a block of flats, opened in May 1962.

Old maps show that the Sunday school and hall was a large building behind the church, stretching across the full width of the site.  We believe that what is left is just the hall. On Google satellite view, in 3D mode, you can see the scar left on its southeast face, from the removal of the Sunday school element.
