Plaque

Lehmann and Helena Gluckstein

Inscription

{On the grave to the left, below Hebrew text:}
In memory of Lehmann Meyer Gluckstein who departed this life, 13th day of June A.M. 5619, aged 69 years.

{The grave to the right seems to have the same format, Hebrew text followed by some English, but, at this distance, we cannot read any of it.}

{On the raised plaque:}
Here lie Helena and Lehmann Gluckstein. Matriarch and patriarch of the family, who founded the catering firm J. Lyons and the tobacco retailer Salmon & Gluckstein. Whose legacy was: Find a safe place. Love your family and friends. Give back to society. Savour the good things. Tell your story. Pass it on.

The raised plaque is constructed from one of the original steel beams from the 1896 Trocadero building in the centre of London, built as the Trocadero Restaurant by J. Lyons and Co.

Site: Lehmann and Helena Gluckstein (1 memorial)

E9, Lauriston Road, Hackney Jewish Cemetery

On the day we visited the gates were locked so we took our close-up photo from outside, through the railings.

Practically all our information for this entry comes from our reading of the splendid 2019 Legacy by Thomas Harding published by Heinemann, a history of the family (Harding's own) that built the J. Lyons empire.

These graves were brought to our attention by the Epilogue of that book. The Epilogue describes the first visit Harding paid to the graves and how he, with the help of his family, had the grave restored and the plaque erected.  No date is given for these events but it must have been shortly before 2019.
