Fountain

Passmore Edwards drinking fountain - N1

Erection date: /9/1901

Inscription

{On a bronze plaque attached to the plinth:}
This drinking fountain has been erected by the Metropolitan Public Gardens Association, 83 Lancaster Gate, W., at the cost of J. Passmore Edwards, Esq., it being the desire of the donor to thereby add to the enjoyment of visitors to this garden, in the acquisition of which for public use the Association co-operated with the Vestry of Shoreditch.
  September 1901.

We love the elaborately correct use of English: "... in the acquisition of which for ...". To us it seems exaggerated, convoluted. Did people actually talk like this, or was it just used in writing?

N1, Hoxton Square

Just to the west, on Pitfield Street, is the former Passmore Edwards Free Library, one of many which he funded. It has now been refurbished for use by the Courtyard Theatre.
