Blackheath war memorial

Inscription

{Left hand panel:}
1914

{Central panel beneath the Royal Borough of Greenwich coat of arms with the motto Tempore Utimur (We use time):}
Borough of Greenwich
In glorious & grateful memory of the men of this borough who gave their lives in the Great War. The number exceeds 1600 and their names are recorded in a roll of honor deposited in this memorial.

{Right hand panel:}
1918

{On a separate, temporary, addition:}
Five names (see Commemorated subjects).

{At the foot of the memorial:}
Also in grateful remembrance of those residents of the borough who gave their lives to the country during the war 1939 - 1945.

The separate, temporary, addition can be seen in our photo - the row of 6 small white crosses, on a white base, which does not appear to be attached to the monument. A name with some details has been hand-written on the base, in front of each cross, and, oddly, the name A. E. Cownden appears twice but with slightly different details.
